Of Knights & Quests: What's Next?

Howdy!

After three years (including a very determine past couple of months), I've got Of Knights & Quests where I want it to be as a base game. I say "base" because I intend to build on it. After all, the game works and it's even fun but there's always more you can do with it.

  • In the long term, I plan to beautify and upgrade the main rules document. Things like marginalia and original artwork, diagrams to assist with rules concepts, et cetera. I'd even like to add a hobby section with a very brief primer on getting started on the physical side of the game with assembling and painting models, and pictures of my demo lances.
  • Speaking of lances, I plan to write rules governing the adoption of an Order for your knights. If a Lance is the formation used in the current quest, the Order is greater organization to which they belong. A faction, in other words. The basic idea is to have a list of benefits to choose from, and the ability to have greater benefits at the cost of a drawback. It'll truly help make your knights stand out and perform differently even if its subtle.
  • I've alluded to it once or twice, but wizards such as Merlin feature in many tales of knightly deeds, and I'd like to find a way to include such powerful and inscrutable mystics. While not necessarily direct combatants like you might see in some roleplaying games, a wizard's presence would likely alter the battlefield or serve as a countermeasure to an enemy wizard.
  • And of course, more quests! Scenarios are the lifeblood of games, and doing the same handful of setups over time can get stale. Among the ideas I'm working out are a village raid/defense and a jousting tournament!
  • Lastly, at least lastly in my current memory buffer, I would like to implement a campaign system. Campaigns are linked games where the results of one game directly influence the next. It can be as simple as letting the winner choose the next quest to play in a chain of five quests, or as complex as models improving over time and gaining abilities and injuries that persist between games. This campaign would lie somewhere in the middle: enough crunch for some interesting choices but without the mountains of paperwork required for some such endeavors.

And there you have it, the rough idea of expansion for Of Knights & Quests. Whether I do these singly as value-priced pdfs or all together as one proper tome, I'm not sure. I could do both, truthfully: released singly then compiled and updated at a later date. We'll see! In the meantime, Godspeed and good questing!
